During the long, hot summer of 2005 I decided to set up my own management consulting company; a business that would help organisations to see a measurable impact on their performance and profits.
Whilst developing the project, I stumbled on the golden number of ‘Phi’, also known as the golden ratio or divine proportion. It is an extraordinary mathematical constant, considered to have an aesthetically pleasing and harmonious quality. I’d found the perfect name for my new company.

The Golden Ratio – Phi
The golden ratio, often represented by the Greek letter Phi (φ), is a mathematical concept with a value of approximately 1.6180339887… It is also known as the divine proportion, the golden mean, or the golden section.
The golden ratio is derived from a simple geometric relationship. If a line segment is divided into two parts in such a way that the ratio of the whole length to the longer part is equal to the ratio of the longer part to the shorter part, then that ratio is equal to the golden ratio. Mathematically, this can be expressed as:
(a + b) / a = a / b = φ
Here, ‘a’ represents the longer segment, ‘b’ represents the shorter segment, and φ represents the golden ratio.
The golden ratio has been known and appreciated since ancient times, and it has been observed in various aspects of art, architecture, and nature. Many consider it aesthetically pleasing, and it has been used in the design of buildings, paintings, sculptures, and even in the proportions of the human body.
The golden ratio can also be found in mathematical sequences, such as the Fibonacci sequence, where each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers (e.g., 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, and so on). As the Fibonacci numbers increase, the ratio of any number to its predecessor approaches the golden ratio.
Overall, the golden ratio is a fascinating mathematical concept that has captivated mathematicians, artists, and designers for centuries due to its intriguing properties and its presence in the natural and man-made world.
